All through out your OS you have a myriad of windows, drop downs, widgets, menus, buttons and the list goes gone. This can result in your screen looking like a five year old ate all the play dough and then threw up on your screen.
One way to reduce the visual noise around these objects is to add drop shadows to them. This affect has been around for ages with Windows, Mac OS X and even on Linux. But this ‘effect’ hasn’t been as widely used in the web environment.
